On December 31, 2009, the Danishefsky household on Manhattan’s Upper West Side was struck by tragedy. Shele Danishefsky, a successful investment banker and mother of two, was found dead in her bathtub, an event initially deemed a tragic accident.
Roderick Covlin, then 45, played a pivotal role in the unfolding events. Initially viewed as a bereaved husband, Covlin’s narrative gradually shifted to that of a prime suspect, culminating in his conviction for second-degree murder.

The Early Years
The couple’s story began with a spark of romance at a Jewish singles mixer in 1998, quickly evolving into marriage and the birth of two children. However, the relationship soured over the years, marred by Covlin’s alleged violent temper, infidelity, and financial instability.
Rod Covlin, struggling to match his wife’s success, reportedly spiraled into a life of aimless gym visits, backgammon obsessions, and infidelity. This discord culminated in their separation, yet Covlin’s proximity remained, living across the hall to maintain a semblance of normalcy for their children.
The Breakdown
Post-separation, Covlin’s actions grew increasingly contentious. He allegedly slandered Danishefsky to her employer and engaged in a bitter custody battle. His behavior, as described by Danishefsky’s divorce lawyer, was demeaning and manipulative.
Shele’s death initially appeared accidental, with suspicions arising only later. Her family, respecting Orthodox Jewish customs, initially eschewed an autopsy. However, growing doubts led to the exhumation of her body, revealing a homicide – Shele had been strangled.
The Trial and Conviction
In 2015, Covlin was arrested, and the subsequent 2019 trial exposed shocking allegations, including plans to harm his own parents. The prosecution painted a picture of Covlin as a man driven by greed, desperate to claim Danishefsky’s $5 million estate.
Covlin’s defense highlighted the lack of direct evidence, but the jury remained unconvinced. Convicted of second-degree murder, Covlin was sentenced to 25 years to life. He continues to assert his innocence, alleging prosecutorial misconduct and seeking to overturn his conviction.
Where is Rod Covlin Now?
Rod Covlin remains incarcerated at Attica Correctional Facility, steadfast in his claims of innocence. His case has been marked by failed appeals and continued legal battles. Despite losing these appeals, he remains hopeful for a retrial or conviction overturning.
