Daniel Garcia was once known as a sharp and ambitious young man with a knack for self-promotion. Born in the early 1980s, Garcia grew up in California and captured public attention in the early 2000s when he became involved in high-profile legal battles as a young adult. At the age of 21, he filed a civil lawsuit against his cousin, prominent San Francisco financier Thomas White, alleging sexual abuse. The suit was eventually settled, reportedly for hundreds of thousands of dollars. At the time, Garcia was seen as a courageous whistleblower. But in retrospect, that lawsuit marked the beginning of a darker path.

The case against White—though serious in its allegations—was later challenged. Some co-plaintiffs recanted their stories and claimed they were paid to fabricate testimony. White filed a countersuit, alleging the entire case had been orchestrated to extort him. Though Garcia never retracted his claims, the case revealed a pattern: Garcia had discovered that legal systems and personal narratives could be manipulated.

By his mid-20s, Garcia was moving through social circles in San Francisco with confidence. He presented himself as a budding entrepreneur and a survivor. But under the surface, he was also forging alliances with con artists like Kaushal Niroula—a man who falsely claimed to be royalty. Together, they would orchestrate one of California’s most shocking financial murder plots.

Targeting Clifford Lambert

In 2008, Garcia met Clifford Lambert, a retired art dealer in Palm Springs, through an online dating site. Lambert, who was grieving the loss of his partner and seeking companionship, invited Garcia to visit. During that visit, Garcia pitched a business idea and asked for an investment. Lambert declined and asked him to leave. In response, Garcia stole Lambert’s credit card and upgraded his airline ticket to first class—a seemingly small act that would snowball into something much worse.

Enraged by the rejection, Garcia began working with Niroula to plot an elaborate scam. The goal was to take over Lambert’s financial assets and, eventually, eliminate him altogether. Garcia was later described by prosecutors as the “idea man” of the scheme. He helped devise the plan, recruited co-conspirators, and maintained constant communication with them before, during, and after Lambert’s murder.

On December 5, 2008, Lambert was stabbed to death in his home by two men recruited by Garcia and Niroula—Miguel Bustamante and Craig McCarthy. His body was transported to a remote area in northern Los Angeles County and buried. Over the following weeks, the group drained Lambert’s bank accounts and tried to sell his home and art collection using forged documents.

Arrest, Conviction, and Reversal

Garcia was arrested along with his co-defendants in early 2009. He was convicted in 2012 of murder, conspiracy, grand theft, identity theft, and financial fraud. The jury also found true a special circumstance: murder for financial gain. Garcia was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

However, his conviction was among several overturned in 2020 after secret recordings surfaced of the trial judge, David Downing, making derogatory, homophobic, and biased remarks—specifically referencing Garcia and Niroula’s sexual orientation and HIV status. The comments raised concerns about judicial misconduct, and a new trial was ordered.

Garcia was retried in 2023. Prosecutors presented text messages, financial records, and timelines that detailed his role in orchestrating the crime. Despite claims from his defense that Garcia never intended harm and had rekindled his relationship with Lambert, the jury found him guilty once again.

On April 25, 2025, Judge Anthony Villalobos sentenced Garcia to life in prison without parole, with an additional two-year term for financial offenses. He received credit for over 5,300 days already served.

Legal Delays and Public Outcry

Garcia’s retrial and sentencing were delayed numerous times due to changes in legal representation, claims of inadequate counsel, and his assertion of a rare genetic disorder that required ADA accommodations. At one point, Garcia attempted to represent himself before requesting another attorney. His hearings were punctuated by procedural motions, transcript issues, and complaints of legal bias.

Friends of Clifford Lambert, including Eddie Mullikin and Steven Kilcullen, voiced deep frustration over the prolonged proceedings. As of October 2025, Daniel Garcia is serving a life sentence in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. He is not eligible for parole. At age 42, Garcia has spent over 15 years in custody. He continues to maintain his innocence, despite being convicted twice and described in court as the intellectual driver of the plot to kill Clifford Lambert.

His name now appears alongside the worst financial criminals in California history—a dramatic fall for someone who once portrayed himself as a young survivor fighting injustice.

Garcia’s legacy is not one of victimhood, but of manipulation. Through deceit, he exploited systems designed to protect, forming alliances with conmen and corrupting legal processes to serve personal gain. His conviction helped bring closure to a case that left a community devastated, but it also served as a stark reminder of how far greed, charm, and lies can go when unchecked.
