Airing Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 9/8c on NBC, Dateline’s special episode “The End of the Affair” tells the disturbing true story of Camilo Salazar—a Miami father and businessman whose disappearance and gruesome death unearthed a murder-for-hire plot driven by jealousy, betrayal, and revenge. Veteran correspondent Dennis Murphy leads viewers through a tangled narrative involving one of South Florida’s most prominent supermarket moguls, a secret affair, and a group of hired enforcers with criminal pasts.
The hour-long special dives deep into a case that rattled the Miami-Dade community and captivated the nation. Interviews with prosecutors Gail Levine and Justin Funck, as well as Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle, provide context into the years-long investigation and trial. The episode explores how a personal vendetta evolved into a brutal murder, and how a community—and a courtroom—responded when the truth finally emerged.

The Disappearance of Camilo Salazar
Camilo Salazar was a 43-year-old father of two, living in Coconut Grove. On the morning of June 1, 2011, he dropped off his newborn daughter at his wife’s workplace and was never seen alive again. His SUV remained in the parking lot, untouched. The following day, authorities discovered a burned body near the edge of the Florida Everglades. The body was later identified as Salazar’s.
Investigators found that Salazar had suffered horrific injuries. His body had been bound, beaten with an object that fractured his jaw and skull, and burned. His throat had been slit. Medical examiners described both physical and psychological torture. These grisly details immediately suggested the killing was not random, but targeted.
The Mastermind: Manuel Marin
The investigation eventually led to Manuel Marin, a co-founder of Presidente Supermarkets, one of the largest Hispanic grocery chains in South Florida. Marin was a well-known businessman, but behind closed doors, his personal life was unraveling. His wife, Jenny Marin, had been involved in a romantic relationship with Salazar. When Marin discovered the affair, he allegedly decided to take revenge.
Authorities found that Marin had fled the United States shortly after Salazar’s death, relocating to Spain. He remained out of the country for several years. In 2018, he was extradited back to the U.S. to face charges. Prosecutors accused him of orchestrating a murder-for-hire plot to eliminate Salazar in a calculated and cruel act of retribution.
The Hired Muscle: Fighters and a Gang Member
To carry out the killing, Marin recruited three men: Roberto “Bam Bam” Isaac, Alexis Vila Perdomo, and Ariel Gandulla. Isaac, identified by police as a member of the Latin Kings gang, had a criminal record and a violent past. Vila Perdomo and Gandulla were both former professional mixed martial arts fighters. Marin allegedly promised payment in exchange for their silence and participation.
Salazar was kidnapped shortly after leaving his child’s daycare drop-off. Surveillance evidence and forensic analysis placed the three men near Salazar’s last known location and eventually linked them to the crime scene. Gandulla’s fingerprint was found on Salazar’s SUV, providing key physical evidence. Investigators believed Marin lured Salazar into a trap, where he was abducted and transported to a remote area to be killed.
The Trials and Sentences
After years of investigation, Marin was arrested and brought to trial in Miami-Dade County. In May 2023, Judge Miguel M. De La O sentenced him to life in prison for kidnapping, 30 years for manslaughter with a weapon, and 15 years for conspiracy. During sentencing, Salazar’s family members delivered emotional statements. His widow, Daisy Holcombe, described the lasting trauma and the painful milestones missed by her husband, including their daughter’s birthday and graduation.
Roberto Isaac was convicted of second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit kidnapping and murder. He received a life sentence. Alexis Vila Perdomo was convicted of conspiracy and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Ariel Gandulla cooperated with prosecutors and testified against the others, securing a lighter sentence of 36 months as part of a plea agreement.
Appeals and Ongoing Legal Efforts
In the years following his conviction, Perdomo sought a new trial. His appeal was based on a sworn affidavit from Isaac, who claimed that Perdomo had no prior knowledge of the plan and had not participated in the murder. However, during a 2024 hearing, Isaac invoked his Fifth Amendment right and refused to testify further. This left Perdomo’s legal team without the supporting testimony they needed. Judge De La O denied the motion for a new trial but left the door open for future appeals if Isaac agreed to speak.
Meanwhile, Isaac also began pursuing an appeal of his own conviction. Prosecutors maintained that the evidence presented during the original trial—including forensic findings, phone records, and witness testimony—was sufficient to uphold the guilty verdicts.
A Tragedy Rooted in Betrayal
The Salazar case became a high-profile example of how personal betrayals can escalate into acts of calculated violence. What began as a marital affair ended in a horrific murder that exposed the darker sides of ego, pride, and vengeance. The legal outcomes brought closure to Salazar’s family but also raised difficult questions about justice, complicity, and redemption.
Dateline’s “The End of the Affair” offers a thorough and sobering look at the consequences of betrayal. Through exclusive interviews and detailed reporting, the episode serves not only as a true crime investigation but also as a cautionary tale of how personal grievances can spiral into irreversible tragedy.
