James Ty Flanders was once a respected pastor on Florida’s Emerald Coast. As leader of Calvary Emerald Coast Church in Fort Walton Beach, he presented himself as a spiritual mentor and community leader. Congregants trusted him, and many viewed him as a compassionate pastor dedicated to helping people through difficult times.
Behind that public image, however, Flanders was living a secret life. After meeting Marie Carlson through the church, he and his wife, Tanya, developed a close relationship with her that evolved into a hidden polyamorous arrangement. Marie eventually moved into their home and gave birth to Flanders’ daughter, Grace, in July 2011. The relationship remained largely concealed from church members and the wider community.

The Relationship That Led to Tragedy
By 2011, Marie Carlson was living with James and Tanya Flanders in Fort Walton Beach. What many people believed was a charitable effort by the pastor to help a struggling woman was actually a much more complicated relationship. Marie had become romantically involved with both James and Tanya and was helping raise their shared child.
Investigators later uncovered evidence that tensions had developed within the household. Text messages recovered during the investigation suggested Marie was unhappy with aspects of the relationship. Witnesses also reported friction between Marie and James in the months before her disappearance.
The Murder of Marie Carlson
Marie disappeared in October 2011. Shortly afterward, family members and friends received text messages from her phone claiming she had left voluntarily to pursue a dream. The messages immediately raised suspicion because Marie had left behind her newborn daughter, her belongings, and her entire support system.
For years, Flanders denied involvement. Investigators suspected him from the beginning but lacked enough evidence to file charges. The case gained renewed attention after appearing on the television series Cold Justice in 2015. Soon afterward, authorities arrested Flanders at his home in Cochise, Arizona, and charged him with second-degree murder.
Confession and Plea Deal
Facing trial, Flanders eventually agreed to cooperate with prosecutors. In exchange for a reduced charge of manslaughter, he revealed where Marie’s body had been hidden. Authorities discovered her remains buried in the backyard of the Fort Walton Beach home where she had lived before her disappearance.
Flanders admitted responsibility for Marie’s death, although his descriptions of exactly how she died varied over time. According to court records and media reports, he claimed a confrontation became physical and resulted in her death. He then concealed the crime and used Marie’s phone to create the appearance that she had voluntarily disappeared.
Sentencing
In July 2016, Okaloosa County Circuit Judge William Stone sentenced Flanders to 15 years in prison, the maximum sentence allowed under the plea agreement. Family members of Marie Carlson expressed anger that he could not receive a longer sentence because the original second-degree murder charge had been reduced as part of the deal that led investigators to Marie’s remains.
During sentencing, Flanders apologized and described his life as a lie. The judge acknowledged his cooperation but concluded that the seriousness of the crime warranted the maximum available punishment.
Where Is James Flanders Now?
Public reports indicate that James Flanders has been serving his sentence within the Florida prison system. Earlier reports placed him at Madison Correctional Institution in Madison, Florida.
Based on his 15-year sentence imposed in 2016, Flanders would still be incarcerated in 2026 unless released earlier through credits or other correctional procedures. No credible public reports indicate that he has been released from prison. As of the most recent reporting, he remains known as the former Fort Walton Beach pastor whose secret life and actions led to one of the Emerald Coast’s most notorious murder cases.
Legacy of the Case
The James Flanders case shocked many because it involved a trusted religious leader. What began as a missing-person investigation exposed a hidden relationship, years of deception, and a cover-up that delayed justice for nearly five years.
Today, the case is remembered less for Flanders himself than for Marie Carlson. Her family’s persistence, combined with the work of investigators, ultimately uncovered the truth and ensured that her disappearance would not remain an unsolved mystery.
