Michelle Hadley is the woman at the center of the case featured in NBC’s Dateline episode “Simply Diabolical,” airing Friday, August 21, 2026, at 10/9c. Her case began as what police believed was a revenge-driven cyberstalking campaign against the new wife of her former fiancé, Ian Diaz. It ended with Hadley being exonerated and Diaz, a former deputy U.S. marshal, convicted in federal court for his role in framing her.
Hadley spent 88 days in a California jail in 2016 after authorities accused her of sending threats and arranging sexual assaults against Angela Connell, Diaz’s new wife. She maintained that she was innocent. Investigators later discovered that the electronic evidence used against her had been fabricated. Her ordeal, the investigation that followed and her life after exoneration are also examined in Netflix’s 2026 documentary A Toxic Love Story.

Michelle Hadley’s Relationship With Ian Diaz
Before the criminal case, Hadley had been engaged to Ian Diaz. The two shared an Anaheim, California, condominium and had built a life together before their relationship ended. Hadley has since described the relationship as controlling and has said Diaz’s conduct left her fearful.
In A Toxic Love Story, Hadley said Diaz monitored her movements and that his position in law enforcement added to her sense of vulnerability. Diaz worked as a deputy U.S. marshal and carried a firearm as part of his work. Hadley said she reached a point where she felt as though she was being watched and tracked.
Hadley has also spoken about sexual pressure within the relationship. She said Diaz pushed her to participate in a sexual fantasy involving another man despite her objections. She now discusses those experiences as part of a wider pattern of control that she says she did not understand at the time.
The Relationship Ends and Diaz Marries Angela Connell
After Hadley and Diaz separated, Diaz became involved with Angela Connell. Connell later married him and used the name Angela Diaz during their marriage.
Conflict remained between Hadley and Diaz after their breakup, in part because the former couple still had financial ties to the Anaheim condominium. Hadley has said that she had put much of her savings into the property and did not recover that money after the relationship ended.
The financial dispute became one part of what Hadley now describes as the lasting effect of the relationship. Years later, she would focus part of her advocacy on financial abuse and the ways financial dependence or financial losses can make it harder for people to leave controlling relationships.
Angry Emails Later Become Evidence Against Her
Hadley did send Diaz angry emails after their relationship deteriorated. She has acknowledged using biblical imagery in some of those messages and describing how she believed he would face consequences for his conduct.
Those messages became important when new emails appeared under the name “Lilithistruth.” The later communications contained violent threats and graphic material. Because the author used language that resembled Hadley’s earlier writing, police had what appeared to be evidence connecting her to the messages.
Hadley has maintained that her original messages were angry but not violent. She said the later emails copied elements of her language while adding threats and images that she had never sent. Federal investigators would eventually conclude that Diaz had been involved in creating the false communications attributed to her.
Hadley Is Accused of Targeting Angela Connell
Police were told that Hadley had become obsessed with Diaz and his new wife. Authorities believed she was using email and Craigslist to terrorize Connell.
The allegations went beyond threatening messages. Craigslist advertisements appeared to have been posted under Connell’s identity and invited men to the Anaheim condominium to participate in sexual encounters involving violence.
Men responded to the advertisements and went to the residence. The events made the threats appear credible and gave investigators reason to fear that Connell could be assaulted or killed.
The evidence seemed to point toward Hadley. She was the former fiancée, there was a difficult breakup, and police had emails containing language that appeared similar to messages she had written before.
Michelle Hadley Is Arrested
Hadley was arrested in 2016. She was accused of stalking, harassment and participating in a plot that could have resulted in Connell being sexually assaulted.
Her legal situation became severe. After a second arrest, Hadley was held on $1 million bail. Among the allegations was attempted rape, and she faced the possibility of spending the rest of her life in prison if convicted.
Hadley continued to deny that she had created the Craigslist advertisements or sent the violent communications. Her denials failed to convince authorities at the beginning of the investigation.
She spent a total of 88 days in jail. Contemporary reporting described her family borrowing money to pay for her defense.
Hadley Says Jail Was the Most Traumatic Period of Her Life
Hadley has described her incarceration as one of the defining traumas of her life. She entered jail knowing that the evidence being presented against her did not reflect what she had done, yet she had little ability to prove who had created it.
The public attention made the experience worse. News coverage portrayed her as a jealous former fiancée who had become dangerous after Diaz moved on with another woman. The allegations involved stalking, sexual violence and threats against a woman who was said to be pregnant with twins.
Hadley later said one of the hardest parts was trying to explain her side to people in positions of authority and feeling that they had already decided who they believed. She has said Diaz’s law enforcement position gave him credibility that she did not receive.
The Case Against Hadley Begins to Collapse
Questions began emerging about Angela Connell’s claims. Investigators learned that Connell had made false statements about major parts of her personal life.
According to A Toxic Love Story, Connell had told a previous boyfriend that she had Stage 4 cervical cancer. Her former boyfriend, Jason Rayburn, became suspicious when she resisted allowing him to attend medical treatments. Evidence later emerged indicating that she had used another person’s chemotherapy photograph and had falsely claimed to be receiving cancer treatment.
Connell had also claimed to work as an attorney for the Department of Justice. That claim was false.
Investigators then discovered that another major claim was fabricated: Connell was not pregnant with twins. According to the documentary, Diaz discovered a doctored sonogram and pregnancy tests that had been altered.
Digital Evidence Points Away From Michelle
The most important change came from the electronic evidence.
Investigators began tracing the threatening communications and Craigslist activity. The digital trail did not support the theory that Hadley had been responsible.
Authorities found evidence connecting communications to locations associated with Connell. The original case against Hadley had depended on the idea that she was remotely tormenting Diaz and Connell while attempting to conceal her identity. The forensic evidence began showing that the story did not fit.
Hadley was released from custody in October 2016 as evidence of her innocence accumulated. She had already lost nearly three months of her life.
Michelle Hadley Is Exonerated
On January 9, 2017, prosecutors formally dismissed the charges against Hadley.
Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas described her as an innocent victim of a “diabolical scheme.” The language would become closely associated with the case and helps explain the title of the 2026 Dateline episode “Simply Diabolical.”
Exoneration restored Hadley’s legal status, but it could not undo the months she spent jailed or the public accusations attached to her name.
The woman who had been portrayed as the perpetrator was now recognized as a victim of fabricated evidence.
Angela Connell Is Prosecuted
Attention turned to Connell. She was arrested in January 2017 and prosecuted in California.
Connell later pleaded guilty to crimes connected to the scheme and other false statements. Her offenses included fraud, false imprisonment and falsely reporting a crime. She received a five-year prison sentence.
The conviction established that Connell had participated in framing Hadley, but Hadley believed the case remained incomplete.
In particular, she questioned why Diaz had not faced the same scrutiny.
Hadley Wanted Investigators to Examine Ian Diaz
Hadley has said she believed authorities focused on Connell without confronting Diaz’s role.
In the Netflix documentary, she explains that after Connell was prosecuted, she still felt that authorities were avoiding the question of the man involved in the case. She wanted investigators to examine what Diaz knew and whether he had helped create the evidence used to send her to jail.
That investigation came through the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General.
In 2017, federal investigators began examining whether Diaz had abused his position as a deputy U.S. marshal and participated in the scheme.
Federal Investigators Uncover Diaz’s Role
Investigators reviewed emails, police body-camera footage and digital forensic evidence.
DOJ Office of Inspector General Special Agent Jason Higley described noticing what he viewed as Diaz coaching Connell during interactions with police. Investigators also examined what they considered Diaz’s hostility toward Hadley.
One of the most important pieces of evidence concerned a man who had responded to one of the Craigslist advertisements. The man had been communicating with someone he believed was arranging a sexual encounter at the Anaheim condominium.
Digital investigators found a communication from Diaz’s personal account continuing the conversation and asking whether the man was on his way to the condominium.
The discovery linked Diaz to the communications that had once been blamed on Hadley.
Ian Diaz Is Convicted
Federal prosecutors charged Diaz, and the case went to trial.
In March 2023, a federal jury convicted him of conspiracy to commit cyberstalking, cyberstalking, perjury and obstruction of a federal matter.
The verdict provided Hadley with something the dismissal of her charges had not: a federal jury finding that her former fiancé had participated in the scheme.
Diaz was removed from the U.S. Marshals Service and received a federal prison sentence of more than 10 years.
For Hadley, the conviction represented the end of an investigation that had taken years to establish the full extent of what happened.
Her Daughter Was Born on the Day Diaz Was Convicted
March 23, 2023, carried another meaning for Hadley.
The same day that a federal jury convicted Diaz, Hadley gave birth to her daughter.
The coincidence became one of the most personal elements of A Toxic Love Story. Hadley had spent years connected to Diaz through the criminal case. On the day a jury held him responsible, she was beginning a new part of her life as a mother.
Hadley now speaks about how raising a daughter has influenced her thinking about relationships and independence.
Michelle Hadley Is Now a Mother
As of 2026, Hadley is raising her young daughter.
Motherhood has become an important part of how she discusses her experience. Hadley, Diaz and several people connected to the story had once worked around Disneyland, and Disney imagery became part of the couple’s relationship. Diaz had compared Hadley to Belle from Beauty and the Beast when they were together.
Hadley has said she now approaches princess stories with her daughter from a different perspective. Rather than placing emphasis on a prince rescuing a princess, she talks to her daughter about courage, intelligence, kindness and standing up for others.
Her goal is to present girls as capable of protecting themselves and helping others rather than waiting to be rescued.
Hadley Has Become an Advocate for Abuse Survivors
Hadley has emerged as an advocate for people who have experienced abusive or controlling relationships.
Her public comments now focus less on proving her innocence, which has been established, and more on what other people might learn from the warning signs she believes she missed during her own relationship.
She has discussed the instability that can characterize abusive relationships, including periods in which a partner behaves with affection followed by periods of control or cruelty. Hadley has said this cycle can make leaving difficult because the person experiencing the abuse may continue waiting for the earlier version of the relationship to return.
She has also encouraged people in these situations to trust their instincts when they sense that something is wrong.
Financial Abuse Has Become a Major Focus
Hadley places particular emphasis on financial abuse.
She has said she invested her savings in the down payment for the Anaheim condominium that she shared with Diaz and never recovered the money. The financial consequences continued after their romantic relationship ended.
Her experience led her to speak about how money, property and financial dependency can keep people tied to former or abusive partners.
Hadley has argued that survivors should not carry the full burden of navigating those financial consequences and has called for greater societal and legal recognition of the economic damage associated with abusive relationships.
Hadley Is Speaking About What Happened to Her
For years, Hadley believed that the public had heard the accusations against her without hearing the full explanation of how those accusations had been manufactured.
A Toxic Love Story, released by Netflix in 2026, gave her a prominent opportunity to present her account. The documentary reconstructs the accusations, her imprisonment, Connell’s prosecution and the federal investigation that led to Diaz.
Hadley participated in the project and spoke about parts of her relationship that she had not discussed in the original news coverage.
She has said that making the story public carries risks because victims who speak openly can face criticism, online attacks and questions about why they remained in a relationship. She nevertheless believes sharing her experience is worthwhile if another person recognizes similar warning signs.
What Michelle Says She Learned From the Relationship
Hadley now views her relationship with Diaz through a different lens than she did while she was living through it.
She has described understanding patterns of control that she did not identify at the time. Her message to other women includes recognizing that abusive behavior should not be dismissed because a partner can also be affectionate.
She has also spoken about self-compassion. People can become trapped in relationships through emotional, financial and psychological pressures, and Hadley argues that outsiders often underestimate how difficult leaving can become.
Her comments reflect a shift from the question that dominated her life in 2016, whether she could prove she was innocent, to a broader discussion about why people remain in controlling relationships and what happens after they leave.
Michelle Hadley’s Life After “Simply Diabolical”
Hadley enters 2026 in a position far removed from the woman photographed leaving a California courthouse after prosecutors admitted that they had imprisoned an innocent person.
She is a mother, an abuse-survivor advocate and a participant in the documentary that has brought renewed attention to her case. Her focus includes domestic abuse, coercive control and the financial barriers that can prevent people from leaving unhealthy relationships.
The criminal record surrounding the case has also changed. Hadley has no criminal responsibility for the cyberstalking plot. Connell was convicted in state court. Diaz was convicted in federal court, and his convictions survived an appeal.
For Hadley, however, the outcome is not limited to those verdicts.
She spent 88 days incarcerated, faced the possibility of life in prison and saw her name connected to allegations involving stalking and sexual violence. She then waited years for investigators to establish Diaz’s role in the plot.
Her story in Dateline: Simply Diabolical is therefore not only about an unusual cyberstalking case. It is about what happened after a woman who insisted she was innocent was not believed, and how she built a new life after the evidence proved that she had been telling the truth.
