Who Was David Knezevich & What Happened to Him? 2026 Update & Profile

David Knezevich was a South Florida businessman whose name became known internationally after he was accused of kidnapping and murdering his estranged wife, Ana Maria Knezevich Henao, following her disappearance from Madrid, Spain, in February 2024. His arrest, the evidence assembled by investigators, and his death while awaiting trial transformed the case into one of the most closely followed international criminal investigations in recent years.

Born in Serbia and later becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen, Knezevich lived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he and Ana built a successful life together. During their 13-year marriage, the couple operated businesses and accumulated a substantial portfolio of real estate investments throughout South Florida. By 2023, however, their marriage had deteriorated, and they were engaged in a bitter divorce involving millions of dollars in assets.

A Marriage Marked by Financial Conflict

Before the criminal allegations emerged, David and Ana were known as successful business owners. Together they built technology and real estate ventures that generated significant wealth. Friends and family later described the divorce proceedings as contentious, with disagreements centered on the division of their businesses and properties.

As the marriage collapsed, Ana moved to Madrid in late 2023 in hopes of beginning a new chapter. David remained in Florida. Prosecutors would later argue that the ongoing financial dispute provided a motive for the alleged crime. Defense attorneys, however, maintained that the divorce process was being handled through legal channels and disputed the government’s allegations.

The Investigation Turns Toward David

Ana disappeared from her Madrid apartment on February 2, 2024. Surveillance footage later showed a man wearing a motorcycle helmet entering her apartment building, spray-painting security cameras, and leaving with what appeared to be a large suitcase. Ana was never seen again.

As investigators reconstructed Ana’s final days, evidence increasingly pointed toward David. Prosecutors alleged that he traveled from Florida to Europe shortly before her disappearance. According to court filings, he flew to Turkey, traveled to Serbia, rented a vehicle, and drove thousands of miles across Europe to Madrid. Authorities also alleged that he purchased materials used to disable security cameras and took steps to conceal his movements.

Investigators further alleged that suspicious text messages sent from Ana’s phone after her disappearance had been fabricated to create the appearance that she had voluntarily left with another man. Evidence presented by prosecutors included allegations that David sought assistance in drafting messages in a style intended to resemble Colombian Spanish.

Arrest and Federal Charges

On May 4, 2024, David Knezevich was arrested at Miami International Airport after returning from Serbia. Federal authorities charged him with kidnapping resulting in death, foreign domestic violence resulting in death, and the foreign murder of a United States citizen. He was held without bond at the Federal Detention Center in Miami.

A federal grand jury later returned an indictment outlining prosecutors’ theory of the case. According to the indictment, David traveled to Spain intending to confront Ana and allegedly carried out a crime that resulted in her death. Prosecutors described the case as carefully planned and supported by surveillance footage, travel records, vehicle data, and other evidence gathered across multiple countries.

David pleaded not guilty and was preparing to fight the charges at trial. His attorneys argued that the government had not proven its case and noted that Ana’s body had never been recovered. Despite the defense’s position, prosecutors maintained they possessed substantial evidence linking him to her disappearance.

Death Before Trial

The criminal case came to an abrupt end on April 28, 2025. While being held at the Federal Detention Center in Miami, David was found unresponsive in his cell. Prison personnel attempted life-saving measures before emergency responders arrived, but he was pronounced dead.

His attorney later confirmed that he died by suicide while awaiting trial. At the time of his death, he was 37 years old and had been in federal custody for nearly a year. His death meant that the criminal case would never proceed to trial and that a jury would never hear the evidence against him in court.

The Questions Left Behind

David Knezevich’s death ended the prosecution but did not end the investigation into Ana’s disappearance. Her body has never been found, and authorities continue to search for information regarding her remains. The FBI has stated that investigators believe her remains may have been transported along a route extending from Spain through several European countries toward Serbia.

For Ana’s family, David’s death brought mixed emotions. While they no longer faced a lengthy criminal trial, they also lost the possibility that he might reveal what happened to Ana or where her remains were located. Family members have publicly stated that one of their greatest frustrations is that many questions may never be answered.

Today, David Knezevich remains the central figure in the investigation into Ana Maria Knezevich Henao’s disappearance. Although prosecutors never had the opportunity to present their case before a jury, the evidence gathered by authorities led them to accuse him of carrying out a crime that spanned multiple countries and left a family still searching for closure.
