Who Was Fran Smith & What Happened to Her? 2026 Update & Profile

Betty “Fran” Gladden Smith was a devoted mother, sister, and paralegal whose unexplained disappearance in 1991 launched an investigation that ultimately uncovered one of the most extraordinary true crime cases in recent American history. Although her body has never been found, the search for Fran exposed the hidden past of her husband, John David Smith III, and led investigators to discover that his first wife, Janice Hartman, had also disappeared years earlier.

More than three decades after Fran vanished from her West Windsor, New Jersey, home, her family continues to seek answers. Their determination kept the investigation alive long after many missing persons cases would have gone cold and played a central role in uncovering evidence that eventually led to John Smith’s murder conviction in the death of his first wife.

A Career Woman and Dedicated Mother

Betty Fran Gladden, known to family and friends simply as “Fran,” built a career as a paralegal and was known as a caring, dependable person who maintained close relationships with her family.

Her daughter, Deanna Childers, has described Fran as a devoted mother who remained an important part of her life even after adulthood. Fran also shared a close bond with her sister, Sherrie Davis, and other relatives, who later became tireless advocates in the search for justice.

Family members have consistently remembered Fran as someone who stayed in regular contact with loved ones. They said it was completely out of character for her to disappear without warning or stop communicating with family.

Those who knew her also described her as independent and practical, qualities that made the circumstances surrounding her disappearance even more difficult to accept.

Marriage to John Smith

Fran met engineer John David Smith III while living in Florida. The couple married in 1990 and soon began a new chapter together.

In early 1991, they relocated from Florida to West Windsor, New Jersey, after Smith accepted a position with the manufacturing company Carborundum. They settled into a condominium in the Canal Pointe community near Princeton.

At the time, Fran believed she was beginning a stable married life with Smith. Neither she nor her family knew that he had previously been married or that his first wife had disappeared under mysterious circumstances years earlier.

Investigators later discovered Smith had carefully concealed much of his personal history from those around him, including members of Fran’s family.

Her Disappearance in 1991

Fran disappeared on September 28, 1991, when she was 49 years old.

The timing raised immediate concerns because she was recovering from a broken hip following recent surgery. Family members and investigators questioned how someone with limited mobility could suddenly leave home without assistance, luggage, or notifying anyone.

Nearly a week later, John Smith reported her missing to West Windsor police.

He claimed Fran had left a handwritten note saying she was “going away for a few days” and reminded him to feed the fish. Smith suggested she had packed a suitcase and traveled to visit relatives in Florida.

Investigators quickly found problems with that account. The suitcase Smith claimed she had taken remained inside the condominium, and relatives confirmed Fran had never contacted them or arrived in Florida.

Her daughter immediately became alarmed after speaking with Smith and realizing something was seriously wrong.

Her Family Never Stopped Looking

From the beginning, Fran’s disappearance became more than a police investigation. Her family undertook their own search for answers.

Her sister, Sherrie Davis, and daughter, Deanna Childers, maintained close contact with investigators over the years, gathering information, preserving evidence, and keeping public attention focused on the case.

Their persistence proved invaluable as detectives uncovered John Smith’s secret first marriage and learned that his former wife, Janice Hartman, had also vanished after divorcing him in 1974.

Rather than allowing Fran’s case to fade into history, her family continued attending hearings, speaking publicly about the investigation, and supporting law enforcement through decades of inquiries spanning New Jersey, Ohio, Connecticut, California, and Indiana.

Andrea Canning later described their efforts as one of the most determined family-led quests for justice ever featured on Dateline.

The Murder Investigation

Although Fran’s remains have never been located, investigators came to believe she had been murdered.

Retired FBI Special Agent Robert Hilland spent years working alongside local detectives, revisiting evidence, interviewing witnesses, conducting searches, and attempting to determine what happened after Fran disappeared.

Investigators believed the similarities between Fran’s disappearance and the earlier disappearance of Janice Hartman revealed a consistent pattern. Both women disappeared while married to John Smith, both were reportedly said to have left for Florida voluntarily, and neither was ever seen alive again.

In 2019, nearly 28 years after Fran vanished, Mercer County prosecutors presented the case to a grand jury.

John Smith was indicted on a charge of first-degree murder despite the absence of Fran’s body, reflecting prosecutors’ confidence in the extensive circumstantial evidence gathered over decades.

Why the Case Was Dismissed

The prosecution faced a major setback in 2022 when a New Jersey judge ruled that jurors could not hear evidence concerning Smith’s conviction for murdering his first wife, Janice Hartman.

Without that evidence, prosecutors determined they could no longer prove the murder charge beyond a reasonable doubt.

In 2023, the murder charge against Smith was dismissed after prosecutors negotiated an agreement requiring him to provide information about what happened to Fran’s body.

According to information later shared with Fran’s family, Smith claimed he wrapped her body in a blanket and disposed of it in an industrial dumpster at the factory where he worked in New Jersey.

He did not admit killing her, and investigators never recovered her remains.

Both Fran’s family and retired FBI investigators publicly questioned the credibility of Smith’s account, believing it failed to explain what truly happened.

Fran Smith’s Legacy

Although Betty “Fran” Gladden Smith has never been officially declared a homicide victim through a criminal conviction, investigators have long maintained that she was murdered.

Her disappearance ultimately led authorities to solve the decades-old murder of Janice Hartman, identify a previously unknown victim buried as a Jane Doe, and expose the hidden history of a man investigators believe deceived those closest to him for decades.

Fran’s family has continued attending parole hearings, supporting investigators, and speaking publicly about the case in hopes that the full truth will one day emerge.

More than 30 years after she vanished, Fran remains remembered not only as the central figure in one of New Jersey’s longest-running missing persons investigations but also as a beloved mother, sister, and family member whose loved ones refused to stop searching for justice.
