Dateline NBC revisits a case marked by secrecy, obsession, and betrayal in “Deadly Entanglement,” airing Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 9/8c as part of the Weekend Mystery lineup. Reported by Blayne Alexander, the episode examines the 2013 murder of Desiree Sunford, a 30-year-old middle school art teacher from Yakima County, Washington.
The episode looks beyond the initial appearance of a home invasion and follows the investigation that exposed a complicated relationship involving Desiree, her husband Scott Sunford, and a mutual friend named Paige Blades. What first appeared to be a random act of violence became a case centered on hidden affairs, jealousy, manipulation, and a killer whose connection to the victim was not clear at the start.

A Teacher Loved by Her Community
Desiree Sunford was known as a creative and caring middle school art teacher. Friends, family members, and colleagues described her as kind, warm, and devoted to the people around her. She worked at Wapato Middle School and had built a life around teaching, family, and her marriage to Scott Sunford, her high school sweetheart.
Desiree and Scott married in 2003. Their relationship had survived years of military deployments while Scott served with the Army Reserves. After he returned home and began working at a military training center in Yakima, Desiree hoped to start a family. Those close to her believed she was entering the next chapter of her life when everything changed.
The Night Desiree Sunford Was Found Dead
On April 7, 2013, Scott Sunford called 911 after he said he had been unable to reach Desiree. He told the dispatcher he had been out of town for a family funeral in the Tri-Cities and was concerned because their home had been burglarized the previous weekend.
Deputies went to the couple’s remote Yakima County home and found Desiree dead inside. She was partially clothed and had been shot seven times, including five times in the head. The violence of the scene led investigators to believe the killer had not come to steal property. Former investigators later said the crime appeared targeted.
A Break-In Theory Begins to Fall Apart
At first, Scott suggested the earlier burglar may have returned. Investigators considered that possibility, but the theory raised questions. Detectives found it unusual that someone would return to the same home after a burglary and then commit murder.
The evidence suggested Desiree had been the intended target. The apparent home invasion began to look less like a random crime and more like a staged or misleading scene. Detectives turned their attention to Desiree’s personal life and soon uncovered details that changed the direction of the case.
The Marriage, Paige Blades, and Hidden Tensions
Scott told investigators that he and Desiree had been involved in a three-way relationship with Paige Blades, a woman who had spent time with the couple and had shared their bed. Paige also told police she had been romantically involved with both Scott and Desiree.
Investigators later found messages that challenged the idea of a balanced, consensual arrangement. Desiree had expressed discomfort about Scott and Paige having a sexual relationship. Text messages also showed growing tension between Desiree and Paige, including disturbing statements from Paige about Desiree’s possible “demise” and wanting to “do away” with her.
The Case Goes Cold Before a Tip Changes Everything
Despite the tensions involving Scott and Paige, investigators did not have enough evidence to charge either of them. Cell phone records also appeared to place them away from the home when Desiree was killed. With no clear suspect tied to the physical evidence, the case stalled.
In July 2015, investigators received an anonymous tip naming Marty Grismer. The call was traced back to Paige Blades. Paige then told investigators that Grismer was a platonic friend who was obsessed with her and had confessed to killing Desiree because he believed it would clear the way for Paige to be with Scott.
Marty Grismer and the Murder Weapon
Paige agreed to wear a wire during a meeting with Grismer, but he did not confess during that encounter. The case then shifted when Grismer’s employer contacted authorities after finding pieces of a gun hidden at work.
Investigators traced the weapon to Grismer and determined it matched evidence from the crime scene. That discovery gave prosecutors the break they needed. Grismer was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in Desiree’s killing.
The Plea and Sentencing
In 2017, Marty Grismer entered an Alford plea to second-degree murder. An Alford plea allowed him to maintain that he was not admitting guilt while acknowledging that prosecutors had enough evidence to likely convict him at trial.
Under the agreement, Grismer received a 15-year prison sentence. Authorities concluded that Grismer acted alone and said they did not find evidence linking Scott Sunford or Paige Blades to the murder plot. For Desiree’s loved ones, the sentence did not erase the pain or the lingering belief that the full truth had not been told.
Why the Case Still Raises Questions
“Deadly Entanglement” explores why Desiree’s friends and family continue to struggle with the outcome. The case contained threats, affairs, emotional dependence, and obsession, yet only one person was convicted. That has left some people close to Desiree questioning whether justice was complete.
The episode features interviews with Paige Blades, Desiree’s brother Kasey Cast, friends Kim Odell and Michelle Howell, former investigators Ed Levesque and Dave Johnson, and Beth Maxwell, the ex-wife of the convicted killer. Through those interviews, Dateline presents a case where the path to the killer was shaped by secrecy and mistrust.
Desiree Sunford’s Legacy
Desiree Sunford’s death left a lasting wound in her family, school, and community. She was remembered as a teacher who cared about her students and as a woman who wanted a future filled with family and purpose.
Dateline’s “Deadly Entanglement” places Desiree at the center of the story rather than the scandal surrounding her marriage. Her murder was not only the result of obsession and deception. It was the loss of a young woman whose life, work, and future were taken inside the home where she should have been safe.
