Who Is David Knight & Where Is He Now? 2026 Update & Background
David Knight was the husband of Carmela Knight and the father of their two sons. To neighbors and acquaintances in Pickering, Ontario, he appeared to be a regular suburban dad, involved in his children’s lives and working in construction. But behind the scenes, David was leading a double life that would end in one of Canada’s most chilling domestic crime cases.
In the years before his wife’s death, David and Carmela’s marriage had been deteriorating. Carmela discovered that David had been carrying on an affair with a woman in Florida, where the family owned a second property. Though he promised to end the relationship and attended marriage counseling, David continued seeing the other woman. Eventually, Carmela filed for divorce and sought custody of their children. At the same time, David was preparing to move to Florida permanently.
His financial situation was unraveling. He had stopped paying the mortgage on the family’s home and faced mounting pressure. Investigators later discovered he had taken out a life insurance policy on Carmela worth $800,000, which became a central motive in the murder investigation. As his marriage and finances crumbled, David made a devastating decision: he arranged for his wife to be killed.

What Did David Knight Do?
On September 14, 2014, David Knight left his home around 3:30 p.m. to take his sons to hockey practice. Surveillance footage confirmed his alibi at the rink. While he was away, his friend and contractor, Graham MacDonald, hid inside the house. When Carmela returned home from work, MacDonald attacked her, strangled her to death, and staged the scene to appear like a drug overdose. He then set the garage on fire in an attempt to cover up the crime.
What followed was a complex investigation. With no direct evidence linking David to the murder, Toronto police turned to a “Mr. Big” operation. Undercover officers gained MacDonald’s trust and recorded multiple confessions, including detailed accounts of the murder and David’s role in orchestrating it. MacDonald admitted that David offered him $100,000 and a new life in Florida in exchange for killing Carmela.
To strengthen their case, police arranged for MacDonald—still under the impression he was dealing with criminals—to demand partial payment. David handed him $5,000, which was recorded by investigators. This exchange became the final piece of evidence needed to arrest him.
Where Is David Knight Now?
David Knight was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and arson. He stood trial alongside Graham MacDonald. Both men were found guilty and sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 25 years.
David is currently serving his sentence in a Canadian federal prison. He has not shown public remorse, and his actions continue to haunt his family. His son Dylan later spoke about the trauma of realizing that his father was responsible for his mother’s death, saying, “I didn’t want to believe it… he ruined my childhood.”
David’s name is now tied to one of the most disturbing examples of betrayal and financial greed in Canadian criminal history. His conviction brought a measure of closure to Carmela’s loved ones, but the scars left behind remain.
