Who Was Ana Maria Knezevich Henao & What Happened to Her? 2026 Update & Profile

Ana Maria Knezevich Henao was a successful entrepreneur, real estate investor, and naturalized American citizen whose disappearance from Madrid, Spain, became one of the most closely watched international criminal investigations in recent years. Her story is now the focus of Dateline NBC’s “Missing Ana,” which examines both her life and the investigation that followed her disappearance.

Originally from Colombia, Ana later moved to South Florida, where she built a successful life and business career. Alongside her husband, David Knezevich, she accumulated a significant real estate portfolio and helped manage numerous investment properties throughout the Fort Lauderdale area. Friends described her as intelligent, hardworking, and deeply caring toward family and friends.

As her marriage deteriorated, Ana began looking toward a different future. Friends said she hoped to create a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping women who had experienced abuse and wanted to use her personal experiences to support others facing difficult situations.

Moving to Spain for a Fresh Start

By late 2023, Ana’s marriage to David Knezevich had broken down. The couple had been married for approximately 13 years and were involved in a contentious divorce that included disputes over millions of dollars in real estate assets. Prosecutors later identified the financial conflict as a significant factor in the case.

Seeking distance from the turmoil, Ana relocated to Madrid. Friends said she viewed Spain as an opportunity to rebuild her life and begin again away from the stress surrounding the divorce proceedings. She settled into an apartment in the Spanish capital and remained in close contact with friends and family in the United States.

Although she was navigating a difficult period personally, those close to her believed she was optimistic about the future and excited about the possibilities ahead. Tragically, she would disappear only weeks after making the move.

The Day Ana Disappeared

On February 2, 2024, Ana was seen entering her Madrid apartment building at approximately 1:42 p.m. She later participated in a video conference call and exchanged messages with friends during the evening. Her final known text message was sent at approximately 10:01 p.m.

When friends stopped hearing from her, concern grew quickly. The situation became even more suspicious when messages appeared to be sent from Ana’s phone claiming she had met a man and was traveling with him. Those who knew her immediately felt the messages did not sound like her. Investigators later alleged that the texts were not written by Ana at all.

Ana was never seen again after that evening. What began as a missing-person investigation soon evolved into a multinational homicide investigation involving authorities in Spain, Serbia, and the United States.

The Surveillance Video That Shocked Investigators

The breakthrough came when investigators reviewed security footage from Ana’s apartment building. The video showed a man wearing a motorcycle helmet and reflective vest entering the building at approximately 9:27 p.m. on the night she disappeared.

According to investigators, the man spray-painted the building’s only surveillance camera before proceeding further inside. Later footage showed him leaving with what appeared to be a large rolling suitcase. Authorities eventually concluded that the suitcase may have contained Ana’s body.

Spanish police and the FBI spent months analyzing travel records, surveillance footage, digital communications, vehicle rentals, and financial records. Their investigation increasingly focused on Ana’s estranged husband.

The Case Against David Knezevich

Federal investigators alleged that David Knezevich traveled from the United States to Europe shortly before Ana disappeared. Authorities said he rented a Peugeot in Serbia, modified the vehicle, drove across multiple European countries to Madrid, and used stolen license plates to conceal his movements.

Investigators also linked him to purchases of spray paint and other items believed to have been used during the crime. Surveillance footage allegedly placed him in Madrid on the day Ana vanished. Prosecutors claimed the evidence demonstrated extensive planning before her disappearance.

In May 2024, David Knezevich was arrested in Miami and charged with kidnapping resulting in death, foreign domestic violence resulting in death, and the murder of a U.S. national abroad. He denied wrongdoing through his legal team and was awaiting trial.

A Family Still Without Answers

Despite extensive searches, Ana’s body has never been found. Investigators believe her remains may have been transported along a route stretching from Spain through France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, and Serbia. The FBI continues to seek information and in 2026 announced a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the recovery of her remains.

The case took another dramatic turn in April 2025 when David Knezevich was found dead in a federal detention facility in Miami. Authorities determined he died by suicide while awaiting trial. His death ended the criminal prosecution and ensured that a jury would never hear the full case presented in court.

For Ana’s family, the loss remains profound. They continue searching for answers and hope that one day her remains will be found. While investigators believe they know who was responsible for her disappearance, the absence of a trial and the continued lack of a body mean that many questions surrounding Ana’s final hours remain unanswered. More than two years later, her loved ones continue to fight for the truth and to preserve the memory of the woman they lost.
