Who Was Emma Walker?
Emma Jane Walker was born on March 20, 2000, in Knoxville, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Jill and Mark Walker and had a younger brother. Emma attended Central High School, where she became known through her school activities and friendships.
She joined the Central High School cheerleading squad during her freshman year and became part of the school community surrounding the Bobcats athletic program. Her mother later described her as compassionate, kind and someone who had many friends.
Emma also took her education seriously. She was an honor student and participated in Health Occupations Students of America, the National Beta Club and Young Life. Her interests pointed toward the career she hoped to pursue after finishing high school.
Emma planned to study neonatal nursing. Her interest in caring for newborn babies later became part of the way her family and community chose to remember her.
Emma Walker’s Relationship With Riley Gaul
Emma met William Riley Gaul in 2014 when she was a 14-year-old freshman at Central High School. Gaul was two years older and played wide receiver on the school football team.
The two began dating and remained involved in an on-and-off relationship for about two years. At first, people close to Emma saw Gaul as attentive and polite. Jill Walker has said that her first impression of him was positive.
Over time, however, Emma’s friends and relatives began noticing problems. Gaul became possessive and did not want Emma spending time with certain people or taking part in activities he did not approve of.
Emma’s parents came to view the relationship as unhealthy. By October 2016, they had grounded Emma and told her to stop communicating with Gaul.
Emma Tries to End the Relationship
Emma attempted to end the relationship in November 2016. Gaul did not accept the breakup.
According to testimony and evidence presented during the murder case, Gaul had used emotional pressure during the relationship. He had threatened suicide when Emma tried to leave him and continued attempting to contact her after the relationship ended.
Investigators later concluded that some of his behavior was designed to frighten Emma and create situations in which he could return to her life as someone who could protect or rescue her.
The breakup became central to the prosecution’s case after Emma was killed. Prosecutors argued that Gaul was angry that Emma no longer wanted to be with him and refused to accept that he had lost control of the relationship.
A Staged Kidnapping Frightens Emma
Three days before Emma’s death, an unusual incident occurred that became important evidence at Gaul’s later trial.
On November 18, 2016, Emma received an anonymous message telling her to leave her house. She then encountered Gaul, who claimed that he had been kidnapped and left unconscious.
Emma did not believe the story. Friends later testified that she became angry after realizing that Gaul appeared to have staged the incident.
The episode showed how far Gaul was willing to go to regain Emma’s attention. His defense later argued that the staged kidnapping was part of a pattern in which Gaul created frightening situations so that he could present himself as Emma’s rescuer.
Prosecutors saw the incident as evidence of escalating behavior before the murder.
Emma Reports a Man Dressed in Black
Around the same period, Emma became frightened by another incident outside her home. She reported seeing a person dressed in black near the house.
Friends later testified that Emma sent messages describing how frightened she felt. In one message, she expressed fear that she might die.
At the time, Emma did not know how those incidents would connect with what happened next. After her murder, investigators examined the strange events as possible evidence that someone had been stalking or frightening her before the shooting.
Police later recovered black clothing among items connected with Gaul. Prosecutors argued that the frightening incidents formed part of the conduct that preceded Emma’s death.
Riley Gaul Takes His Grandfather’s Gun
On November 18, the same day as the staged kidnapping incident, Gaul took a 9mm Glock handgun belonging to his grandfather.
The gun had been stored beneath the seat of a vehicle. When Gaul’s grandfather realized it was missing, he worried that Gaul might use it to hurt himself.
The weapon would become one of the most important pieces of evidence in the murder investigation.
Gaul also spoke with friends about the gun. After Emma was killed, those conversations helped investigators connect him with a weapon matching the type used in the shooting.
What Happened to Emma Walker?
During the early hours of November 21, 2016, Gaul traveled from the Maryville area toward Emma’s home in Knoxville’s Sterchi Hills neighborhood.
Emma was sleeping in her bedroom.
From outside the Walker house, Gaul fired two rounds through the exterior wall into the area where Emma’s bed was located.
One of the bullets struck Emma in the side of the head behind her left ear. Another bullet entered the bedroom and lodged near her bedding.
Emma never had the chance to react. She was killed while lying in her own bed.
The method of the shooting became important at trial because prosecutors argued that Gaul knew the layout of Emma’s bedroom and knew where her bed was positioned against the wall.
Emma’s Mother Finds Her the Next Morning
At about 6 a.m., Jill Walker went into Emma’s bedroom to wake her for the day.
She found her daughter unresponsive.
Jill called 911 after realizing Emma was not breathing. At first, authorities did not know that Emma had been shot.
A forensic technician examining the bedroom noticed a bullet hole in the wall. Investigators then discovered another bullet hole and found shell casings outside the house.
The discovery transformed the scene into a murder investigation.
Police determined that someone had stood outside the Walker home during the night and fired directly into Emma’s bedroom.
Investigators Begin Looking at Riley Gaul
Detectives with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office began interviewing Emma’s family, friends and classmates.
Gaul’s name came up repeatedly.
Investigators learned about the troubled relationship, Emma’s attempts to end it, the staged kidnapping and the frightening events she had experienced before her death.
One of Gaul’s friends, Alex McCarty, also told detectives that Gaul had taken his grandfather’s handgun during the weekend Emma died.
That information became significant after investigators determined that Emma had been shot with a 9mm weapon.
Gaul Denies Having the Gun
When detectives questioned Gaul, he denied possessing his grandfather’s Glock.
He also began contacting friends about what they had told investigators.
Evidence later showed that Gaul urged them not to continue discussing the gun with police and suggested that they discredit some of their earlier statements.
His behavior increased suspicion among people close to him.
McCarty and another friend, Noah Walton, became convinced that Gaul was hiding information about Emma’s death.
The two young men then made a decision that changed the course of the investigation.
Two Friends Agree to Help Police
Alex McCarty and Noah Walton agreed to cooperate with investigators.
Police equipped them with recording equipment, including microphones and a hidden camera. Their goal was to remain close to Gaul without allowing him to realize they were helping detectives.
Walton invited Gaul to his house under the pretense that they would spend time together.
While police monitored the situation, the friends talked with Gaul about the investigation and the missing gun.
The operation placed McCarty and Walton in a difficult position. They were helping detectives investigate someone they had known as a friend while attempting to keep their cooperation secret.
The Murder Weapon Is Recovered
During the recorded encounter, Gaul began discussing what should be done with the gun.
He proposed taking it to an area known as the Bluffs, where investigators believed he planned to dispose of it.
The group stopped at a family residence where Gaul had hidden the weapon.
The gun was inside a bag with other items, including gloves, trash bags, tennis shoes, black tape and dark clothing.
The recovery of the weapon gave investigators a major piece of physical evidence.
Police arrested Gaul before he could dispose of the gun.
The Evidence Against Riley Gaul
Investigators built their case from several forms of evidence rather than relying on one piece alone.
The missing 9mm Glock connected Gaul with the type of weapon used to shoot Emma. Witnesses knew he had taken the gun, and his attempts to conceal and later dispose of it became part of the prosecution’s case.
Cell phone and witness evidence also helped establish Gaul’s movements around the time of the shooting.
His college roommate said Gaul had been away during much of the night and returned to Maryville College at about 4:45 a.m.
Investigators also examined Gaul’s communications with friends, his attempts to influence what they told police and the clothing and other items recovered with the gun.
Riley Gaul Is Charged With Murder
Gaul was arrested and later indicted on multiple charges connected with Emma’s death.
The charges included first-degree murder, felony murder, tampering with evidence, stalking, reckless endangerment, possession of a firearm during a dangerous felony and theft related to his grandfather’s gun.
Gaul was 18 years old when Emma was killed.
His case attracted national attention because of the ages of the victim and defendant, the nature of their relationship and the unusual way police recovered the murder weapon.
The murder also raised questions about warning signs in teenage relationships and how controlling behavior can escalate after a breakup.
Riley Gaul Goes on Trial
Gaul’s trial began in Knox County Criminal Court in April 2018.
Prosecutors presented evidence about Emma and Gaul’s relationship, the breakup, the staged kidnapping, the person dressed in black, the missing gun and Gaul’s behavior after Emma’s death.
Emma’s family and friends testified about what they had seen during the relationship and during the final days of Emma’s life.
Jurors heard Jill Walker’s 911 call and saw evidence from the Walker home.
They also heard recordings made during the undercover operation involving McCarty and Walton.
The Defense Admits Gaul Fired the Shots
Gaul’s defense did not argue that another person had fired into Emma’s bedroom.
Instead, defense attorney Wesley Stone argued that Gaul had fired the shots but had not intended to kill Emma.
The defense portrayed the shooting as part of another attempt to frighten Emma. According to that theory, Gaul hoped to create danger and later step into the role of the person who could comfort or protect her.
Stone pointed to the staged kidnapping as an example of the same type of behavior.
The defense asked the jury to consider whether Emma’s death resulted from reckless conduct rather than a planned murder.
Prosecutors Say Gaul Intended to Kill Emma
Prosecutors rejected the defense explanation.
They argued that Gaul knew the layout of Emma’s bedroom and knew where her bed stood against the wall.
He had spent enough time around Emma and her home to know where she would be sleeping.
The state argued that firing two shots into that specific area was not a random effort to create noise or fear.
Prosecutors also pointed to Gaul’s actions before and after the shooting, including taking the gun, attempting to manipulate Emma, trying to influence his friends and planning to dispose of the weapon.
They argued that the evidence showed premeditation.
Riley Gaul Is Found Guilty
On May 8, 2018, the jury returned its verdict.
William Riley Gaul was found guilty of first-degree murder and the other principal charges connected with Emma’s death.
The verdict meant jurors rejected the claim that the shooting had been a reckless attempt to frighten Emma.
They agreed with prosecutors that Gaul had intentionally killed her.
Judge Bobby R. McGee imposed a life sentence for the murder.
What Sentence Did Riley Gaul Receive?
Gaul received life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after serving 51 years.
He also faced punishment for the other offenses connected with the murder and his efforts to conceal evidence.
The murder conviction has remained in place despite later legal challenges.
Gaul sought a new trial and appealed his convictions, but Tennessee appellate courts upheld the first-degree murder judgment.
His legal challenges did not change the finding that he was responsible for Emma’s death.
Emma Walker Was Only 16
The criminal case established what happened to Emma, but it could not restore the future she had expected to have.
She was only 16 years old when she died.
Emma had not yet graduated from high school, started college or pursued the neonatal nursing career she had planned.
She was killed in the bedroom of her family home, a place where she should have been safe.
Her death left her parents, brother, friends and classmates dealing with a loss that extended far beyond the criminal proceedings against Gaul.
Emma Walker’s Legacy
Emma’s family and community created several memorials in her name.
Students at Central High School established the Emma Walker Memorial Scholarship. Knox County later dedicated the Emma Jane Walker Memorial Dog Park in her honor.
East Tennessee Children’s Hospital also dedicated a neonatal intensive care unit room in Emma’s memory.
That tribute carried special meaning because Emma had planned to pursue neonatal nursing.
The memorials have helped preserve Emma’s identity beyond the details of the crime that took her life.
Jill Walker Speaks About Teen Dating Violence
Emma’s mother, Jill Walker, has become an advocate following her daughter’s murder.
She has spoken about the warning signs associated with controlling and violent relationships and has worked to keep Emma’s story connected to efforts to protect victims.
The case has become an example used in discussions about teen dating violence.
Emma’s experience showed that emotional pressure, threats, jealousy, stalking and manipulation should not be dismissed simply because the people involved are teenagers.
The events before her death also demonstrated the danger that can arise when one person refuses to accept the end of a relationship.
Remembering Emma Beyond Her Murder
Emma Walker’s story is often told because of the extraordinary investigation that led to Riley Gaul’s conviction, but her life was larger than the crime committed against her.
She was a daughter and sister, a Central High School cheerleader, an honor student and a teenager preparing for adulthood.
She had plans to enter a profession centered on caring for newborn children.
Her family has worked to make sure those parts of Emma remain part of her story.
Emma died on November 21, 2016, at just 16 years old. The jury verdict against Riley Gaul provided accountability for her murder, while the memorials created in her name continue to represent the life and future that were taken from her.
